Core & Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

The core is our foundation for movement. The deep core system is made up of the diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, transverse abdominus and multifidus muscles. Optimal movement requires appropriate and timely recruitment and coordination of these muscles.

The muscles of the pelvic floor are involved in creating and maintaining stability for our body as it moves. It is also responsible for containing our pelvic organs, allowing proper urinary control and balancing pressure changes throughout the abdomen with breath and movement. The act of breathing causes a change in the pressure system of our abdomen. Activities of daily living challenge our ability to control our pressure system with various tasks such as sit to stand, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling. All of which are seemingly harmless tasks when our body is functioning optimally. Disruptions such as pregnancy, labour and delivery, abdominal or back surgery, hip surgery, or other trauma interrupts core coordination creating signs and symptoms listed below. Pelvic Floor retraining is part of core training.

At Tidal Physiotherapy, you will learn how to optimally use your core muscles create dynamic stability with function to prevent injury and optimize overall strength and mobility.

Dysfunction of the core can present in many ways including:

  • Stress or Urinary Incontinence (Leaking with increased abdominal pressure, such as sneezing, coughing, jumping, and laughing)
